KALARI THERAPY

Kalari Chikilsa (theraphy) is a system of medicine used along with Ayurveda and Sidda systems, especially for the treatment of orthopedic disorders and neuromuscular problems like Arthritis (64 types), Migraine (6 types), Back pain, sciatica, spondylitis, Disc Prolapse, Hip pain, Joint problems affecting knees, elbows, shoulders, bones fractures etc.

How it works?

Kalari identifies 107 vital points in human body - located at the junctions where flesh, veins, arteries tendon, nerves, bones and joints meet.  The knowledge about these marma's plays a major role in the efficacy of Kalari Chikilsa.
The underlying principle of Kalari Chikilsa is that an abnormality to any system of the human body such as nervous system, musculoskeletal system can happen only if any one or more of the 107 vital spots are bruised. The treatment is all about detecting the vital spots affected and restoring them to normalcy.
The different treatment methods used in Kalari Chikilsa are:

Uzhichil
It is a unique therapy to rejuvenate the nervous and muscular systems of the body and to stimulate the blood circulation. This therapy includes the massages with medicinal oils and systematic application of pressure on the muscles and at the same time stimulating the nervous system and the circulatory systems. Both hands and feet are used in the Uzhichil massages.

Kizhithirumu
T
his therapy involves the massages with specially prepared herbs and leaves bundled in a cloth bag, known as "kizhi' and dipped into a thailam (Medicated oil), the temperature of which is determined according to the physique of the patient. The combination of oils also changes, depending on the body type. The kizhi is applied with certain pressure on the body where there is pain and swelling.

Kalari and Orthopedics
Kalari has developed a traditional orthopedic system, which is popular for the setting of displaced or fractured bones and neurological complaints. All Kalari medicines are made from herbs, barks and leaves of plants locally available in Kerala. These medicines are pulverized and then made into a paste by adding oil, ghee or white of an egg and put around the area of bone setting. After placing the bones on correct position, twigs will be used as a support to effect immobilization.
